Our third meeting of the semester was all about learning how to build community on campus. The meeting began with a video on the growing role of women in the sport of Buhurt and what both women and men are doing to make the sport into a space for all athletes to feel welcome- which will be provided below. Members Eric, William, and Tomoya let me know ahead of time they had scheduling conflicts and would not be able to attend the meeting. (But that's what these are for! So no sweat!) Just so prospective members are aware however, the procedure for when no members can attend a meeting in person is that I will hang around the seminar room until 1815 and if no one is there, I'll pack up and head out.
After a recap from the previous week's meeting, the agenda continued with a room-wide activity in coming up with different ways to build a sense of community on campus including ideas such as addressing sport and recreation opportunities, campus cleanliness, student lounges and more outdoor tables and chairs, student accessibility, and the potential for starting a campus garden. The meeting then broke out into break-out groups to discuss ways to meaningfully execute our ideas such as a campus clean-up activity. The next part of the meeting delved into ways to make these meaningful solutions into enjoyable activities such as turning trash picked up on campus into art. Finally, the meeting ended with a closing video about how to connect these ideas with the world of sport on the global community level with an example of how the surfing community works together to help preserve marine biology which is provided below.
