Meeting Minutes: Weekly Recap of our Weekly Meetings

Our sixth meeting of the semester was all about the concept of helpfulness. The meeting began a bit late due to intense rain in town slowing down public transit (a lot), but with a video on how our brains make quick judgements on who to help and who not to help- which will be provided below. Members Eric, William, and Tomoya let me know ahead of time they had scheduling conflicts and would not be able to attend the meeting. (But that's what these are for! So no sweat!)

After a recap of last week's meeting which covered the topic of loyalty, the meeting's agenda then turned to how to be more helpful with particular focus on how students and the university can help each other more. This included questions about discussing physical, mental, and social activities on campus to promote student health. This also included the levels of helpfulness: skilled help (like people certified in First Aid/CPR) and unskilled help (like picking up trash on campus), as well as cultural awareness (like how in some cultures, it is rude to look someone in the eye while speaking to them). That developed into breakout sessions about how to improve university services.

The agenda then shifted to discussing upcoming events including Diversity Week events, a June event, and a potential summer trip. Our Diversity Week event will be on Monday and will be a 3v3 basketball shooting tournament from 5-6:30pm. Members not in attendance suggested a cookout of some kind for the June event. The potential summer trip I suggested was a surf-themed trip to Hossegor, France to learn more about the sport of surfing, the impact of it has on local communities, and about the World Surf League's efforts in promoting gender equity and combating climate change and ocean pollution. To close the meeting out, the agenda included a video on the WNBA player's union and their work in improving services for professional basketball players- which is included below.

The Hall Pass: Fraternity Events outside of Meetings

I also heard back from Professor Molzberger last week about my idea for a surf camp in France. The professor suggested getting in contact with three key groups including the German surfing federation (which I never would have guessed was a thing) and the Sport Tourism degree program to try to coordinate efforts. This is still not an officially approved idea yet, but we could make this an unofficial trip which would carry with it no school credit, but would still be educational (and leisurely).

Obscure Sports Weekly: Obscure Sports from Around the World

In the final days of Easter Island's Rapa Nui culture before resources ran out and residents slowly died off; there was an intense competition combining open-water swimming, rock climbing, and running where the winner would be crowed with the title of Tangata manu or "bird man" after the name of a bird-like god the sport celebrated. Not only would this person be considered a champion athlete, it also decided who would lead the island's people for the new year. Learn more about this intense competition with the video below.
