Meeting Minutes: Weekly Recap of our Weekly Meetings

Our fourth meeting of the semester was all about learning how to build trust on campus. The meeting began with a video on how our brains make quick judgements on who to trust based on what people look like- which will be provided below. Members Eric, William, and Tomoya let me know ahead of time they had scheduling conflicts and would not be able to attend the meeting. (But that's what these are for! So no sweat!) Fortunately there were enough members in attendance to hold the meeting on site.

After a recap from the previous week's meeting on community development, the agenda continued with an activity on coming up with ideas for that builds trust and the foundations of trustworthiness such as ethics, reliability, and honesty before discussing what specifically universities can do to earn the trust of their students. A major factor from our conversation was the theme of communication and how unreliable communication between a university and its students can make trust difficult. The meeting then moved to discussing our plans for a campus clean-up on Saturday 14 May. All Spoho students are welcome to attend. We will be meeting outside of the main building at 1400 and will pick up trash around campus for about an hour or so.

I also suggested my idea for a one week surf camp to France to teach students surfing and to learn more about the work of the World Surf League. The meeting then broke out into a discussion on ways to meaningfully build trust on campus. One excellent idea was to install a suggestion board in the main building for students to post ideas for improving the school and obstacles they may need university assistance in overcoming. Finally, the meeting ended with a closing video about examples of when trust was broken in sport via some of the most rigged moments in sports history- which is provided below.

The Hall Pass: Fraternity Events outside of Meetings

Acting President Joseph spoke with members of the university's International Office and Office for Diversity and Inclusion last week to discuss ways to advertise the fraternity and increase membership. In the International Office, Joseph sent this semester's awesome advertisement poster and discussion potential university special seminars in non-German languages to provide more learning content outside of normal classes for international students.

This included a potential surf camp the fraternity could organize in Hossegor, France in which students would take surf lessons and learn about how the surf industry is responding to climate change and social justice movements. With the members of the Officer for Diversity and Inclusion, Joseph learned about the university's planned Diversity Week at the end of the month. The university is asking Nu Beta to host one of the events for the week- which we will need to come up with ideas for at our upcoming meeting this week.

Obscure Sports Weekly: Obscure Sports from Around the World

In Bolivia, women's pro wrestling is no joke. Inspired by the Lucha Libre of Mexico, Bolivian women's wrestling has become a major martial art for growing audiences and a growing platform for promoting indigenous women and girls. In a culture with strict gender norms, sport is a frequent space for women and girls to perform less feminine norms. Check out this great video on Cholita Wrestling below, and let us know what obscure sport we should spotlight next!
